NEW BOUTIQUE IN SOUTH END 'THE BOULEVARD'

1440 South Tryon Street
Charlotte NC 28203
980 219 7526

After five years in Historic NoDa, Jennifer, Carmen, Angie and Cindy have a new home right here in South End. Their shop named "The Boulevard" is absolutely adorable, and so are the owners. They have exquisite taste and an eye for original clothing, handbags, jewelry and all sorts of beautiful, mostly handmade works of art.

The community here in Dilworth has welcomed them with open arms and truly embraced the idea of giving very talented folks a place to create and sell their creations at "The Boulevard."

Now if you are an artist of clothing and accessories you will have an outlet to show your "stuff."

They moved into their new location November 1st and are very excited to be here. Drop by and experience an array of all sorts of beautiful items and the prices are so right. I fell in love with the jewelry; it is not your ordinary handmade jewelry and the handbags are so chic. Let me know on our contact page what you thought about the new shop.

REMOVING A TREE IN DILWORTH

FYI: Getting permission to cut down a tree in Dilworth is not an easy task.

It actually took several weeks to get an email from Wanda Birmingham stating we had the ok to take a tree out of our front yard. Her telephone number is 704 336 2302.

I am sharing this with you because my tree could have fallen into the street on someone or someone's car by the time I finally got the ok to cut it down. It had started dropping large limbs and was pretty threatening.

I first called the city to find out who to call and no one knew the answer. I attempted to contact the Dilworth Historical Society and was never quite sure who or where that would be. It seems the City Arborist used to handle these requests in the past and now his office said the Forestry Service has the final say. They said Ms. Birmingham is the person to talk to, and so on.

I spoke with Ms. Alexander, and she gave me Ms. Birmingham's number and a few weeks later I received an email it was ok to take the tree down.

Oh yes. The city did come out and leave a white flag in my yard where they want me to plant another tree but no note, email or call saying it was ok to cut down the naughty tree.

JJ's RED HOTS - FOR THE LOVE OF HOTDOGS - NEW IN DILWORTH

1514 East Blvd.
Charlotte, NC 28203
980 225 8880

What a wonderful idea, to specialize in hotdogs, and in such a unique way. Who doesn’t love a good hotdog?

We had the pleasure of attending the media event at JJ’s and what a time we all had, munching on the best hotdogs I have tasted in a long time. There was great variety to choose from and the service and attention was impeccable.

There is so much involved in what the owner, Jonathan Luther, has done to bring us the best in hotdogs, potato rolls, mustard, pickles, etc. all made in the USA. And then there are all the foods made on the premises, chili sauce, beer mustard, bratwurst, pineapple salsa, lemonade etc. It really is too much to mention. I guess you will just have to make your next dining experience this fabulous, not to mention beautiful, little restaurant in the heart of Dilworth for the best hotdog anywhere that we know of.

By the way JJ’s is located where The Drum was many years ago. They pay homage to our history by displaying a sculpture of a set of drums hanging from the ceiling and The Drum logo displayed on the wall.

Don’t miss the view from their rooftop patio – one of a kind for the Dilworth neighborhood.

I can’t wait to go there again and again. Who ever gets tired of eating hotdogs?

"FORT WILD" - A NEW ADDITION TO THE CHARLOTTE NATURE MUSEUM

1658 Sterling Road
Charlotte, NC 28209
704 372 6261

What a wonderful place to visit, to take the children or the whole family. We were completely entertained with everything there is to do and see at the Nature Museum.

The new attraction "Fort Wild" is a natural outdoor habitat that encourages play and exploration.

The National Wildlife Federation selected the Charlotte Nature Museum for the first funded project of its kind - showing families how they can create outdoor play spaces from natural elements found in their own backyard.

This is a growing trend nationally that aims to foster the appreciation of nature and bring back a defining part of childhood.

Growing up in Oakhurst, a country community in my day, we had the wonderful woods and a beautiful creek to play in all day and imagine we were in a jungle in Africa.

Children who don’t have that experience can have a little of the jungle or anything they can imagine (that’s a lot) in their own backyards with a little help and old-fashion ideas of what is fun.

CHARLOTTE SHAG CLUB HALL OF FAME AT LYNN'S DANCE CLUB

4819 S. Tryon Street
Charlotte, NC
704 257 3064

Lynn's Dance Club on South Tryon in Charlotte was jam packed to induct some new members into the Charlotte Shag Club Hall of Fame and judge some of the best dancing we have seen.

As most folks know, the shag dance (just called "dancing" in the beginning) has been a tradition in North and South Carolina since the 1940's and now is practiced and performed all over the country (the world?).

Shag clubs abound and Charlotte is no exception. Every Thursday night, Lynn's Dance Club hosts The Charlotte Shag Club members for dancing and a whole lot of fun.

Any shaggers/dancers in Dilworth are encouraged and welcome to comment on their memories of the dance on our contact page.

FRESHBERRY FROZEN YOGURT & SMALLCAKES CUPCAKERY
JERSEY MIKES SUBS

1300 East Boulevard
Charlotte, NC 28203
704 817 9263

If you haven't already you must try the new yogurt and cupcakes at Freshberry/ Smallcakes located on the corner of East Blvd. and Scott Ave. where Blockbusters used to be.

The yogurt is the best, so, so creamy and full tasting, and the cupcakes are too good to pass up - fresh, fresh, fresh. I don't even like cupcakes, but now I think about their cupcakes all the time.

Of course Jersey Mike's is a tradition for sub lovers. Two of the customers having lunch told me they always eat at Jersey Mike's. They have tried other sub shops and always come back to Mike's.

BRINGING DEMOCRACY TO CHARLOTTE
AMERICAN PRESIDENTIAL EXPERIENCE 2012

West Third & Mint Streets
August 31-Sept. 8

The Oval Office was recreated on the Square to announce an exhibit to be displayed at 3rd and Mint Street during and after the Democratic National Convention. The exhibit will display 31 individual historic artifacts, iincludng a replica of the Oval Office during President Kennedy's term, President Truman's limousine, the fuselage from Airforce One to board and explore, and letters from Abraham Lincoln's administration, to mention a few.

After the presentation we had an opportunity to talk to Mayor Foxx. Our first up-close and personal interview. He coined the phrase, describing the exhibit, "Bringing Democracy to Charlotte."

Mayor Foxx spoke of the convention and what it means to our beautiful city and the excitement everyone feels and how the exhibit will express democracy and not just the democrats who have served our country.

On a more personal note when asked if he was on the First Lady's diet he responded by saying he was not sure what she ate but that she had been an inspiration to change some of his choices of food and add exercise, running and swimming, to his daily routine and his children were also involved. He said he had lost 17 lbs. he really looks good, he is a handsome man.

A tiny lady, dressed in a bright yellow hat and dress, with an accent maybe Jamaican, approached Mayor Foxx saying she was not from Charlotte but was honored to meet him, what a privilege to shake his hand, and walked away.

The Charlotte Observer had an article a few weeks ago saying other parts of the country still don't know where Charlotte is exactly and we still have to say North Carolina. Everyone knows where Baltimore, Chicago, San Francisco and other well known cities are. It will be interesting to see in the weeks and months to come if that changes. The convention is going to be a true life changing event for us.

OH LA LA! VESTIQUE LADIES APPAREL NOW OPEN

1531 East Boulevard
Charlotte, NC 28203
704 798 0850

When we walked in Vestique for the first time the openness, color, and staging hit us in a such a positive way I immediately found something to buy. The price was right the style was perfect for my body shape and I had a great choice of colors, oh... and they had it in my size. I did not feel overwhelmed with too much merchandising or too much help.

Tracy Croner the store manager, adorable, was perfect and had the best energy for being present if you needed her to help.

Over all we think this is the best little big thing to happen on East Boulevard for ladies clothing in a good while. So, why not? Why not now? Why not you?
