FITNESS BAR & RESTAURANT

Located inside the lobby of the Dowd YMCA at 400 East Morehead is a delicious buffet of home and southern cooking. I remember eating there years before I became a "Y" member. Until then I would leave the neighborhood to find fresh cooked vegetables, fried chicken, homemade desserts ect. For the last ten or so years I have eaten there regularly and always love the food it is consistently fresh and oh so healthy. The one thing Linda Helkson the owner and operator wanted me to share is you do not have to be a member of the "Y" to eat there.

She is hostess to everyone in the Uptown, South End and Dilworth area especially her homeless Bankers who lunch there regularly. Her family as she calls them (photo above) all come together to put on a spread every day like the one at my Grandmothers house on Sunday when I was growing up. The guy in the middle of the photo is a regular, Mack Everett, one of Linda's favorites. With a laid back atmosphere and plenty of dining area, huge TV screens and ample parking in the parking lot this could be a quick in and out or a leisurely lunch with family or friends. There are alternative choices to satisfy all tastes, including salad bar, homemade soups fresh fruit. Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner prices range from $5.00 to $7.00. They also do a large catering service10 to 100 people.
See you there.

NO RULES BOOK CLUB

The "No Rules Book Club" created and organized by Cathy Hunt owner and operator of "The Facial Room" and her associate April Ann Arigoni have brought together some pretty special women who are mostly connected because they are Cathy and April's clients. A group of about 20 ladies who get facials and or massages at "The Facial Room"

We were surprised at the diversity yet the likeness of the women we met at this months meeting. They have different interests and lifestyles, but that common thread that binds makes for so much fun and a coming together, no one can stop talking. Women are wonderful!

The first book read was "Eat, Pray and Love" Elizabeth Gilbert's bestseller about her experiences through divorce, depression and traveling to far away places to find herself and really get her life. It was so very interesting to hear how the book landed on the different club members and the take on the book in general. Looking for a way to really connect, join a book club or create your own. Wonder what a book club for just men would look like? Would love to be invited to a meeting.

BEI JING CHINESE CUISINE
1603 SOUTH BLVD. DILWORTH/SOUTHEND

What a cool surprise we had finally, real authentic Chinese food right here in Dilworth. Offering traditional dishes and many new style dishes. Dinner Specials include soup, egg roll and rice. Chanthaly, the manager was totally in charge when we dined there. She stressed the fact their chef uses little or no oil in his dishes and only fresh vegetables and ingredients. Guaranteeing you a fresh and healthy meal.

They do serve beer and wine in there delightful dining room with booths or tables for your comfort. Although the atmosphere is casual we had the feeling of elegant service and surroundings. We dined on lettuce wraps, spring rolls and shrimp egg foo young with rice and gravy. Everything was a treat and reminded me of Chinatown in Washington, DC, some of the tastes and flavors were familiar and brought back memories. Daily Specials and coupons on their website also offering take out and party trays. Oh LaLa prices are great, portions are generous.

FIRST FRIDAY OF THE MONTH
GALLERY CRAWL SOUTHEND/DILWORTH

Back in the spring the Atherton Mill Museum presented "Save Our Signs" featuring a dozen local and regional artists and their interpretation of local signage, vanishing Americana and the emerging landscape. Historic Charlotte's Leah Burch is the preservation Planner and Grants Coordinator for Save the Signs.

The photos above show a couple of the signs we grew up with and some of the signs we still see today Copal Grill, Park Road Shopping Center ect. I wonder where the Coffee Cup, is and if it is preserved? Also I wonder if Wad's Drugstore, The Drum, The Epicurian and many more from Dilworth are stored and preserved. I have a request into www.HistoricCharlotte.org for any info on signs that were here in Dilworth for many years.

The trolley displayed in the lobby of the Trolley Museum is amazing, something magical in sitting in the seats and imagining what it would have been like to ride with other Dilworthians back and forth to town. We want to know more about the Walking Tour the museum offers thinking what a way to learn the history of our community during a cool summer night and visit the galleries on Camden and East Blvd. during the crawl. The museum offers sponsored events and children's parties to learn more about hosting a party 704 375 0850

The Charlotte News a preserved and a historic published Newspaper in Charlotte it is in the same block as the Trolley Museum displaying this murrell on there outside wall. Love it who is the artist?
